Teeth Straightening FAQs

  • Following an initial consultation, you will be provided with an estimate of the number of trays needed to complete your treatment which will give an estimate as to how long it will take. Our patients typically require 4-6 trays per arch and you should allow 3 weeks per tray, meaning 12-18 weeks of treatment on average.

  • This is our normal treatment plan:

You come into Park Cottage Dental Practice and we take impressions and possibly make a study model.

You come back one week later to collect and fit your new tray.

Two weeks later, you come back to get your next impression done, but continue wearing your previous tray in the meantime.

One week after your second impression is done, you come back to pick up your new tray.

    …and so on!

For those who live further, we can post you each tray for no extra cost with the exception of the 1st tray. We require the first fitting in person so we can ensure that the tray is the correct fit.

All impression sessions must be done in person.

  • Payment is due on each impression appointment.

The price for one arch (upper or lower) is £185.00 per tray.

If you are straightening your upper and lower arch, the price is £350.00 for each set of trays.

During the first impression appointment, patients may require a study model be made in order to plan the order of treatment. This will cost an additional £50.00

  • You will require retainers to keep your teeth in the finished position. There are two options we can discuss:

    • Fixed Retainer - A thin, unnoticeable, wire fixture attached to the back of the teeth (you won’t feel it or see it).

    • Removable Retainer - A clear retainer to be worn during sleep.

Both retainers cost £135.00 per arch.

  • You can smoke with the trays in, but it is not recommended.

Removing the trays when smoking will help prevent slight discolouration of the tray.

  • No, remove tray(s) for eating or chewing any food or snacks as they will stick to the tray.

  • If your tray is lost or broken, please book an appointment with us for a new impression ASAP to avoid any delays in treatment. Even a slight crack in the tray may cause issues with your treatment. If you are unable to get an appointment quickly, we recommend wearing your previous tray to stay on plan for your course treatment with minimum delays.

Broken/Cracked Tray from general use: No charge (as long as the broken retainer is brought along to the replacement appointment)

Lost Tray: £185 (cost of a new tray)

  • Yes, we are seeing more and more adults seeking out this option!

  • We provide a carry case for your tray for when you need to remove them. We recommend keeping them in the tray rather than wrapping them in a napkin that may accidentally be thrown away!

We can also provide a foldaway travel toothbrush for you go out for a meal.

  • Whilst the treatment is not a painful process like fixed wire braces may be, there may be some temporary discomfort for the first few days of a new tray cycle.

This is not something to worry about as it is a sign that your tray is working and your teeth are moving into place.

  • Similar to fixed wire braces, speech may be slightly affected temporarily for some people as your tongue gets used to changes in your mouth. This should only last a few days.
